Getting Started with Drones at UCLA

It’s important to get these logistical items set up before you go out and fly. So this is a checklist of mandatory technical and legal steps to review in order to be insured by UCOP.

  1. Register the drone purchased with both the FAA and UCOP. Once the drone is registered with UCOP the drone is under the UC’s Insurance program and considered property of the University of California.
  2. Have a Pilot obtain an FAA Drone License or determine if your project is exempt from this federal requirement
  3. Register yourself as a Pilot with UCOP
  4. Identify a place to fly and determine if it is both safe and legal to do so.
  5. If you are planning to fly not on UCLA property, then submit a UC Flight Request with UCOP. If you plan to fly on UCLA property, then submit a Flight Request with UCLA’s Drone Committee.
  6. After flying submit a Post-Flight Report
