Unix

Unix accounts are available for faculty, staff, and graduate students of a Social Sciences Division. Undergraduates in eligible departments may obtain accounts with faculty sponsorship. Each account has a quota of 100MB, which can be increased to 500MB on request. Please email chenj@ssc.ucla.edu to increase your quota. For students, Unix accounts will expire at the end of every summer.

To apply for an account you can either print out the form below or ask for an application at the Social Sciences front desk located at 2041 Public Policy. Please return the completed form to the front desk of Social Sciences. Accounts should be available within two working days of submitting your form. An email will be sent to you with your login name and default password.

Using the Account:

Due to security issues with telnet, SSC requires that Unix accounts be accessed through SSH, which can be downloaded for free. Please visit the Security tab of our website and click on Secure Shell (SSH). Graduate students should access Aristotle.sscnet.ucla.edu. Faculty and Staff should access nicco.sscnet.ucla.edu. The first time you log in, the system will ask you to enter a password. If you do not do this within five working days, the account will be blocked. If you have problems, please contact Julie Chen at 5-7335

After your first year you may renew your account by emailing your name and student ID to chenj@ssc.ucla.edu. Data stored on accounts will be stored for three months after expiration of an account.

A list of the software available for Unix users can be found under "Software available" under the Labs tab at the top.
