Welcome to UCLA! We've put together some information to help you get acquainted with the computing services available at SSC and across the UCLA campus.
You are eligible for accounts on two different email systems, Bruin Online and Social Sciences. You will probably
want both, but for different reasons. Bruin Online (BOL) Email (address@ucla.edu) was designed for students, but
has also been co-opted to provide some campus authentication (login) functions.
Here is what you'll need it for:
- Gradebook login and electronic submission of grades through My.UCLA
- Off campus access to campus-only Library and other resources via Proxy Server
- Off campus access to campus-only Library and other resources via Virtual Private Network (VPN)
- Personal web space which your students may use for web-projects
Social Sciences Email is set up to give most departments their own email name, e.g. address@econ.ucla.edu or
address@history.ucla.edu. SSC's email provides more storage and more types of access than BOL email. It is designed
specifically for faculty and staff. We recommend that you configure your BOL email address to your dept. email, since it has more storage.
Support for your UCLA owned equipment and software is provided in many Social Sciences Departments by a department tech support person who you should get to know.
SSC maintains a Support Desk to provide you with answers to your computing and network related questions.
Instructional Computing Class web sites are set up automatically for all undergraduate classes and you'll be
emailed with this setup information about 5 weeks before classes start, if not earlier.
Grad classes can be set up on request to either your department webtech or the Support Desk.
The course management software we use is home-grown, but highly integrated with the campus login system as
well as the Registrar. You can learn more about it at our ClassWeb section. Since
it is home-grown, we are always interested in your comments and suggestions. Please contact
Mike Franks or
Caroline Tam regarding these web sites.
Research Computing Unix accounts are available for faculty, staff, and grad students in the Social Sciences.
