Most of the Social Sciences departments utilize Novell Netware which provides file and print services for staff,
faculty, and lab computers. A file server provides a central location on your network where you can store and
share files with users across your network. A print server provides access to one or more printers on the network.
SSC and other departments use
Pcounter in their computer labs which provides accounting, management, and logs of all print jobs.
All hard drives are volatile and you should always have a backup and restore procedure in place. Backup and
restore procedures need to be periodically reviewed and tested to verify that the files are being backed up correctly.
Every user has different needs and SSC can help you determine a backup strategy to fit your needs.
There are essentially two categories of files that you will need to back up. Archive Files are files that do
not change after being creates (like images). Data Files are files that change after being created (like spreadsheets).
It is fairly trivial to set up a backup procedure and Microsoft Windows XP comes with backup software built-in
(go to Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Backup).
If your hard drive crashes or becomes corrupt, you will need to recover your data and get up and running with
minimal down time. With a backup and restore procedure, recovering the files will be relatively easy. If your
files were not backed up, there is still hope. SSC can run diagnostic software on your hard drive and attempt
to recover your files. There are also commercial businesses that offer more sophisticated tools for recovering
your data.
